Income Generation

The intention behind the Income Generation programme is to encourage the sales of art forms from Creative Spaces and Places, which will enable a sense of achievement and recognition for artists and performers.

Many marginalised groups may face difficulty accessing the labour market and can feel alienated due to the attitudes of employers. While the arts can help to improve their wellbeing and provide a creative outlet, many would appreciate income as recognition of their work. Sales of work can help to increase self-esteem, improve economic status and encourage greater social inclusion. Disadvantaged artists' work often falls within the 'Outsider Art' classification, a niche market that is significant internationally but has yet to be developed in New Zealand.

This programme focuses on the promotion of 'Outsider Art' through a number of initiatives including The Outside-In Gallery (see our 'latest news' for more about the launch of The Outside-In Gallery in December 2007), the upcoming Creative Business Support Service,  and an overall profile-raising strategy.
