Fun and full of light
5 August 2008
When Adam Larkin is asked what he would like to paint, he often uses a single word to describe an idea, and then chooses the colour he would like to start with. From there, an image evolves - often of planets or lightning. Or it might be images expressing energetic layers of colour.
Adam has been coming to Floyds Creative Arts in Christchurch for just over two years. At first, it took him a while to participate in creative projects. Then he discovered painting, which he loves. Enjoying the painting process, he can often remain focused for most of the afternoon and finishes his day socialising with others at Floyds Creative Arts.
Anyone coming into contact with Adam when he is painting soon realises that his art is about fun and sharing. He doesn’t say a lot about his painting but friends at Floyds Creative Arts do. Brilliant, fun, colourful and full of light are just some of words they use to describe Adam’s paintings.
Proud of achievements
One friend commented on the way Adam makes the paint flow on to the canvas. “It’s incredible”.
Adam’s work was recently selected to be part of a community exhibition at the Eastside Gallery in Christchurch. His work also featured in the regional exhibition of this year’s IHC Telecom Art Awards. These two exhibitions are the first time Adam has been involved in exhibiting his work and he was proud of his achievements – and so was everyone at Floyds.
Adam, who has sold his paintings in New Zealand and Australia, builds layer upon layer of paint in his work, which creates interesting texture. He also uses colour extremely well and often finishes his work with bold text, featuring the title and the name of the person for whom it was painted.
Floyds Creative Arts is open to anyone in the community who wants to attend and express their creativity. An average of more than 700 people visit Floyds every week to create art. Adam attends at least three days a week.
