Outsider Art movement
Outsider Art started as Art Brut (Raw Art) in 1949, a movement that focused on art by psychiatric patients. Today, Outsider Art refers to art across different genres that is created by anyone who is on the margins of society and who has had no formal arts training. Outsider Art offers a unique perspective. As Ken Johnson of the Outsider Art Fair in New York says, "The best 'outsider art' is good for the same reasons that art by professional insiders is good: because it is eye-catching, inventively made, unpredictably imaginative and passionately driven ... One thing that the best outsiders have in common is that each has stayed stubbornly true to his/her own creative project, oblivious to artistic standards!"
