Publication examines role of the arts in prison and the justice sector
17 August 2010 The role of the arts in rehabilitating prisoners and reducing re-offending is the theme of Expressions of Freedom and Fantasy, published by Arts Access Aotearoa in 2001. It is one of the few books in New Zealand looking at the role of the arts within prisons and in the justice sector.
Written by Penny Eames and Rebecca Lineham, Expressions of Freedom and Fantasy discusses the role of the arts in changing the physical environment; working with justice outcomes; and developing resilience.
It also describes a number of projects and programmes across artforms: for example, the New Zealand Book Council’s Writers Visiting Prisons Programme, Watea at Christchurch Women’s Prison and the Shut-in Stitchers Quilting Programme at Arohata Women’s Prison.
