My House Surrounded by a Thousand Suns
Award-winning writer and performer Jo Randerson has curated My House Surrounded by a Thousand Suns, on at TheNewDowse in Lower Hutt from 5 July until 26 October.
The recipient of a New Zealand Mental Health Media Grant, Randerson’s show includes artists with experience of mental illness and intellectual disability. The 15 artists in the exhibition are Martin Thompson, Yelena Barbalich, Geoffrey Gaskell, Wendy Best, Daniel Phillips, Raewyn Lee, Colin Korivin, Wendy Randall, Victor Bright, Vicki Dooley, Reece Tong, Penny Taylor, Timothy Rodley, Amy Szostak, Matthew Squire and Ernie Peach.
Inspired by a recent trip to Belgium’s Guislan Museum, which contained a fantastic array of work by artists in alternative mental states, Randerson returned to New Zealand and applied for a Mental Health Media Grant (supported by the Mental Health Foundation and Like Minds, Like Mine) to present a show celebrating individuality, eccentricity and human diversity.
