Exhibitions and workshops for new artists

30 June 2008
Artstation and the New Zealand Film Archive in Auckland are presenting Talk Back, a series of mixed media exhibitions and workshops, opening on 22 July and highlighting the work of artists new to the New Zealand art scene.

Work by Annie Smits Sandano Exhibitions at both Artstation and the New Zealand Film Archive will showcase the work of emerging and established immigrant artists. Vietnamese-born artist Gia Nghi Phung says the exhibition is a celebration of diversity.

“It is a great opportunity to embrace all aspects of my cultural heritage, not just one aspect,” he says. “I have been living in Auckland for almost six years and I think this is a fantastic chance to showcase art being produced by immigrants to Auckland.”

Two-Face Tiki by Gia Nghi Phung Alongside the exhibitions are professional development workshops, to be held at Artstation. These workshops aim to give new artists an understanding of the arts sector in New Zealand and provide opportunities for artists to forge new relationships and networks with the wider art community.

The first workshop is called How to survive and thrive as an artist in Aotearoa/New Zealand, a one-day seminar by Arts Biz offering practical information and outlining the business processes that an artist needs to know to establish an art career in New Zealand. Costing $30, it will be held from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 26 July.

Immigrant artists
Next, Artists Alliance will present Making your mark, a workshop aimed at artists who have recently immigrated to New Zealand. Along with case studies of how three immigrant artists placed themselves in the New Zealand art market, there will be a panel discussion with guest artists on working as artists in New Zealand. This is a free event to be held from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday 2 August.

Finally, Artstation will present the Career path workshop, a one-day forum where Artstation students, tutors and a range of arts practitioners will share their career path stories to inspire and inform participants of the possibilities for careers in the art world. Costing $40, this workshop will be held from 9.30am to 3.30pm on Sunday 3 August.
